Evidently I didn’t listen to much new music in 2009, because I couldn’t even fill a top ten. Oh well. My favourite 7 albums of 2009:
Kryptic Minds - One Of Us
Fucking awesome. Gloomy, foreboding dubstep, gives me the same feeling Mezzanine did back in the day. If One Of Us was a guy who was going to kill you, he’d be slowly following you in the shadows with a silenced handgun.
Two Fingers - Two Fingers
The best electronic hip hop I’ve heard since Shadow Huntaz (and not as lyrically embarrassing as Shadow Huntaz often were), rich as fuck, Amon Tobin kicks so much ass these days. I was never a fan of his, until Foley Room completely converted me. His production values are bananas.
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us
I wasn’t super impressed with this one relative to recent BMSR, or the completely awesome Tobacco solo album, but it’s still BMSR, and still super good.
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
I’m glad I gave Porcupine Tree more of a chance, because I didn’t like them at first, but they’ve grown on me massively.
Imogen Heap - Ellipse
There was a parade of Imogen Heap songs stuck in my head for weeks, it got painful.
State of Mind - Faster Than Light
Not really that great, a few bangers. Eh.
Busta Rhymes - Back On My B.S.
Really sad that Ghostface didn’t qualify for “favourite” but Busta Rhymes did… it was a pretty bad year for hip hop, I think. This album was pretty damned good, though. The song that samples Mike Epps was a year-long source of amusement.
